Aphrodisiac

An Aphrodisiac is a substance that stimulates sexual desire. Some have categorized aphrodisiacs into three kinds - those which stimulate libido, those which increace potency and those which increase pleasure.

Innumerable substances have been claimed to be aphrodisiacs throughout history - some of which (such as the potato) seem surprisingly preposterous in modern times. Others however may have some pharmacological basis for action - and the debate rages on as to whether and which aphrodisiacs are effective.

Some aphrodisiacs are consumed, some are applied topically and some are aromatic substances which are thought to increase desire. These scent aphrodisiacs range from the controversial pheromones, which science has established as verified in animals but not yet in humans, to essential oils and animal musks which were the foundations of the art of perfumery.
