Arthritis is the no.1 cause of disability in the United States, regardless of age, race, and gender. [1] It makes the simplest task like walking, climbing stairs, and even typing feel like an onerous chore. Suffice to say, it impedes one’s performance – as a certain simple move may cause agonizing pain.

Arthritis is characterized by the inflammation of joints and typically worsens with age. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The former is the most common type in the US, affecting over 31 million Americans. In children, rheumatoid arthritis is the most common, affecting 1 in 250 children. In osteoarthritis, the cartilage or tissue that covers the end of bones breaks down. Without cartilage, the bones start to rub together, causing tissue inflammation and pain during movement. Rheumatoid arthritis is a different case; it is an autoimmune disorder wherein the body’s immune system targets the synovium or the lining of the joints – which also causes inflammation and pain every time the joint is moved. [1][2]

Unfortunately, researchers still haven’t found a cure yet for arthritis – today, medical management focuses on alleviating the resulting symptoms from the disease and slowing further deterioration. There are things you can do to prevent further damage and relieve the pain; primarily focusing on lifestyle changes. Managing your weight, quitting unhealthy habits, and exercising your muscles and joints can help you control the pain and the extent of damage to the tissue and bone. Part of lifestyle management involves adjusting your diet in order to lose weight (carrying excess weight puts more strain on the joints and thus can exacerbate the symptoms of arthritis). Dietary changes may also help with inflammation – and these changes typically involve increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables. [3]

However, preparing vegetables can take a lot of time and effort – which can itself be too much if you suffer from arthritic pain. With a juicer, you could save time plus you wouldn’t have to tax your sensitive joints further with chopping and slicing. Juice recipes have become so popular because of their refreshing quality and raw food nutrients.

To ease arthritis pain, we found this juice recipe [4] that you should definitely try:

6 Carrots
3 Celery Stalks
1 cup Pineapple
Half a Lemon

Just juice all the ingredients! You can also add honey or other herbs to taste!

All the ingredients in this juice have been found by scientists to have anti-arthritic action. Here are a few publications that support the ability of the juice ingredients to fight arthritis.

1. Carrots

Carrots are jam-packed with nutrients that provide a wide array of benefits. Their high concentration of beta-carotene may also be helpful in relieving rheumatoid arthritis; as a study found them able to fight inflammation. According to Al-Okbi, in 2014, carrots displayed significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties against arthritis. [5]

2. Celery

Celery may provide support for joint pain and other arthritis symptoms. Historically, various celery preparations have been used to manage acute or chronic inflammatory diseases. A 2015 publication by Powanda, et. al. found that celery seed extract was as effective as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen (all medications used to treat arthritic pain) in suppressing the symptoms of arthritis. The same study also found that the extract was a gastric protectant from the dangerous effects of NSAIDs, in conjunction with its ability to reduce inflammation. [6]

3. Pineapple

Other than providing a delicious fruity flavour, pineapple has significant anti-inflammatory properties that exert anti-arthritic abilities. Kargutkar and Brijesh in 2016 published a study that focused on pineapple fruit peel and tested its extracts on rats affected by rheumatoid arthritis. The extract was able to reduce swelling significantly, as well as arthritic markers from the liver. [7]

4. Lemon

Lemon combats joint pains and gout by maintaining a low level of uric acid in the body. In a recent study published in 2015, Biernatkaluza and Schlesinger found that lemon juice was able to reduce uric acid levels in the blood, battling hyperuricemia which can cause arthritis. Lemon juice was able to cause urine alkalinization and improvement of creatinine after six weeks of treatment. A similar study by Tag, et. la. in 2014 found that lemon extract was able to reduce inflammation in rats affected by arthritis. The results suggest that lemon extract was able to suppress the release of inflammatory cytokines from the immune system, which causes rheumatoid arthritis. [8]

Juicing is an excellent and delicious way to be healthy. But keep in mind that you also need fibers to aid digestion and lower inflammation. Also, you don’t need more than two 8-ounce servings a day because they can be of high caloric content. Enjoy and be healthy!

😳 What Tinnitus Does To Your Brain Cells (And How To Stop It)

After 47 years of studies and countless brain scans done on more than 2,400 tinnitus patients, scientists at the MIT Institute found that in a shocking 96% of cases, tinnitus was actually shrinking their brain cells.

As it turns out, tinnitus and brain health are strongly linked.
