Bulk Laxative

A Bulk Laxative is a substance that increases the bulk of the faeces. This produces larger, softer stools. Bulk laxatives, also known as bulk-producing agents, also cause the to retain more water, as well as forming an emollient gel, making it easier for peristaltic action to move it along. Bulk Laxatives should be taken with plenty of water.

Bulk laxatives are considered to have the gentlest of effects among laxatives and can be taken just for maintaining regular bowel movements.

Well known examples of bulk laxatives include Bran, Gum karaya, Sterculia, Guar Gum, Psyllium Husk, Methylcellulose, polycarbophil, dietary fibre, apples, broccoli and prunes. [1]
